Home and Garden Television Press Release:

Across America and beyond, people are making homes out of former churches, fire stations, schoolhouses, and other old buildings.  The NAHB Production Group’s latest television program, Building Character, is the first series exclusively devoted to taking viewers inside these incredibly unusual residences.  The heart of each story is the homeowner’s struggle to “build character” out of an abandoned building.

Stories on Building Character cover a range of topics related to the adaptive reuse of America’s beloved old buildings.  Segments include the history of each building, the motivation behind the conversion, and tour viewers through newly created one of kind homes.  The stories are told through the eyes of the homeowners, architects, historians and neighbors.  Viewers gain insight into what surprises, challenges and discoveries were made as homeowners converted these unique spaces into their homes.

The focus of the half-hour program is buildings converted into single-family residences, not multi-family condominiums.  From the funky transformation of a Gothic library to the elegant alteration of a Beaux Arts bank, Building Character features the people and the process that magically creates living spaces from commercial structures.

Building Character is looking for exciting projects to feature all across the United States.  If you know of a single-family building conversion, or have a suggestion for a story related to this topic, we want to hear from you!   To recommend stories that might be suitable, call Liz Lovern, Associate Producer, at (800) 368-5242, ext. 8139.  If possible, please include a brief description of the building; its history and the circumstances that led to its conversion, and phone numbers.  Electronic images of the home can be emailed to llovern@nahb.com.

Building Character will air as a weekly series on Home and Garden Television .  HGTV is proud to be the only network devoted to providing comprehensive information to inspire the home enthusiast.  It is seen in 70 million households and is one of today’s fastest-growing networks.  HGTV's  branded programming also can be seen on networks in the Philippines, Thailand, Japan and Australia.
